A minimum of thirteen people killed and 98 hurt in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the pace and management of the country's flagship government projects.

The accident took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.

“We are going to meticulously determine the cause of this accident,” declared the head of state.

The official announced that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The official added plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those involved.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the former leader, whose term finished the previous year. This rail line was a hallmark of his administration's developmental goals for the southern region.

Another ambitious train initiative from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to revitalize the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Building Management and Worries

The construction of both railway systems was supervised by the nation's military, marking a significant growth of its role in civilian projects. They were completed at an accelerated pace, defying expectations to be partially launched before the end of that administration.

However, this rushed timetable had also fueled significant questions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This encompasses an prior accident this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen several non-fatal derailments.

Appeals for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a primary political opposition called for an urgent pause in the development and management of all similar projects.

This halt was suggested until the completion of a thorough independent investigation. The party emphasized that the loss of life "requires immediate answers."

In response, the president asserted that the train had been running in total accordance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and operation of these strategic undertakings.
